Just 10 Km from our hotel lies Ravenna, the city famous for its mosaics and surrounded by a green belt, stretching along the Adriatic coast and offering the picture of a city both active and rich in a glorious history.
In the Augustan age, the city was the settlement of the powerful military harbour of Classe; Ravenna reached the peak of its splendour in the V – VI century: in 540 it became the capital of the Army.
Dating back to this period are extraordinary monuments like: the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the church of St. John Baptist, the Neonian Baptistery, the Arian Baptistery, the Holy Spirit Basilica, the Archiepiscopal Museum, the Mausoleum of Theodoric, the amazing basilicas of San Vitale (a very old Benedictine monastery, mentioned in documents since the X century), Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and Sant’Apollinare in Classe, with the fabulous mosaics, today declared World Heritage sites by UNESCO, making Ravenna unique and famous all over the world.
In Ravenna also lies the sepulchre of Dante Alighieri; next to the church of San Francesco stand the Academy of Art and the Municipal Picture Gallery, hosting important art exhibitions. Important are also the vestiges left by the Venice Republic: the Fortress and the central Piazza del Popolo (“People's Square”).
The former Camaldolese monastery, dating back to the XVI century, hosts the Biblioteca Classense.
Many cultural events take place in the city; the most prominent of them is the Ravenna Festival: a reference point for a summer of international-level music.
Ravenna can be reached through a network of efficient links, and offers a wide range of landscapes, including wide fields of fruit trees, valleys and channels flanked with characteristic fishnets, sand beaches, ancient pinewoods, clean sea.
Ravenna also offers nine beach resorts along its 35-kilometre coast, with a wide range of stay and holiday opportunities.
There are also many cycle paths, allowing to reach any point of the city, like the Theodoric park, the Planetarium, the Garden of Forgotten Herbs or the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe; for those who love nature and hikes nothing can be more exciting than a visit to the oasis of Punte Alberete, amid silent flooded forests, where rare species of birds find a shelter, or to the Nature Museum of Sant’Alberto, close to the valleys.
The ancient pinewoods of San Vitale and Classe are unique; they are considered as true natural monuments and are among the protected areas of the Po's Delta park. Ravenna is considered as a living mosaic.
Ravenna and the nine beach resorts can meet any requirement: hotels rising amid pinewoods, family boarding houses, small villas, flats, camping sites, restaurants greatly appreciated for typical and maritime cuisine, in accordance with a tradition still alive.
For those who prefer a dynamic and trendy lifestyle there are discos on the beach that attract young people from all over the region, while those who choose to practise physical activities will find a wide range of equipment and facilities for any type of sport and fitness: many basketball and beach volleyball courts, sailing clubs, sailing and water-skiing schools, tennis courts, soccer fields, horse-riding clubs and golf greens.
The area is also great for cyclists, who can explore a wide range of itineraries along the coast and from the plain to the hills.
If you wish to recover your health, well-being and beauty, you can have thermal treatments in the spa close to the sea in Punta Marina Terme, offering the most advanced facilities.
